I’ll make it clear from the I did not kill Hugh Henry Van Boren. I didn’t even help…Well, not intentionally.
All Jess Choudhary wants is to keep her head down, do her work, and make it through high school without any problems. As a scholarship student—and one of only two students of Indian heritage—her future at the elite school depends on her ability to keep a low profile and spotless record. But when one of the most popular and richest kids in the school ends up dead in the exact same way as a character in a short story she wrote, Jess unintentionally finds herself at the center of the investigation.
And then Jess receives an anonymous text thanking her for the inspiration.
As rumors run rampant about who the murderer could be, Jess knows if she doesn’t solve this mystery herself, she’ll finally have something in common with she’ll be dead too.
REVIEW:
**A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
A good high school murder drama is right up my alley. Something about the feral-ness of teens makes for good suspense! This Book Kills by Ravena Guron was one I was very much looking forward to read. Unfortunately, the book fell flat for me.
I really wanted to love this book. It had all the elements of a great YA Suspense novel that I look for. Teens, elite/preppy schools, BIPOC, and lots of tensions. What I struggled with from the jump was getting into the book. It just would not hook me. I was suppose to read this book a year ago and after I tried and failed, I put it aside hoping I was just not in the mood for it and would come back. I tried over and over and just couldn’t do it.
Now that is not to say that I won’t like any Ravena Guron books, because I’m sure there is one I would enjoy. This one just did not hook me and if a book doesn’t hook me in the first thirty percent, it automatically gets put back on the shelf. I, admittedly, did not finish this book and therefore cannot speak on the ending. I always encourage others to pick it up and read and let me know what you think about it. Just because it didn’t work for me, doesn’t mean it won’t work for many others! Let me know if you read and enjoy it! But for me, it was a no, sadly.
