If you scroll back through some of the reviews on NerdProblems, you will see that I am a fan of Helen Fields. Her books are always dark and twisty and a little bit more graphic than your typical suspense thriller, which I think adds something to the story. With that said, I had very high hopes for this story.

First, I have to comment on the little bit of romance Fields typically ties into her story. It’s definitely not the forefront of the plot, but it adds a little bit of light in a dark storyline. I really enjoy it and it gives the characters more depth, as most detectives and victims don’t just deal with the crime and go home to nothing.

Fields lived up to my expectations as this story really felt like you were reading about multiple different things, but the stories always tied together and I never felt lost or confused. I was stumped, but not confused. Fields has a way of writing that keeps me so enthralled, but never gives information away. I always am surprised at the end, and that makes all of her books truly entertaining. DS Lively is one of my favorite characters she writes. He can be a bit prickly, but he’s a good guy. Beth had some heavy stuff going on and I thought the backstory really added more to the story, but also made it extremely emotional for me as a mom.

Absolute breathtaking work by Fields in yet another fantastic novel. If you have never read a book by her, run, don’t walk, to the book store and get all of them. I promise you will not be disappointed.
