SYNOPSIS: (From Goodreads)
The Abbott boys, fraternal triplets Henry, Bram, and Adam, live in a mansion on the outskirts of Silver Creek. For decades, their family’s been at odds with the town, long before Mariana Flores died in a fiery accident on the Abbott property last year . The police ruled out foul play, but ask anyone in Silver Creek about it and they’ll say one of the Abbott boys killed her. They just don’t know which one.
But Hayden, the girl who lives next door to the Abbotts, swears they’re innocent. After all, Henry’s her best friend—maybe he could be more. She’s been worried about Adam ever since he was injured in the accident that killed Mariana. As for Bram, he’s a little complicated, but he and Mariana had been in love.
When the new school year brings a new victim—a popular girl, found dead in the woods—the hunt for a monster begins anew. The security camera footage doesn’t show the face of the boy she was last seen with, but from his hoodie he could be any one of the Abbott brothers.
To clear their names, Hayden starts investigating the new death, but the deeper she digs, the more uncertain she becomes. Is one of the Abbott brothers a killer? Or could they all be monsters? And what will the boys do to protect themselves and the truth?
REVIEW:
**A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
I have read several books by Chelsea Ichaso, and I am usually a huge fan of her work! I absolutely love a good YA mystery, especially one that keeps me guessing until the very end. Beware the Abbott Boys follows three brothers, Henry, Bram, and Adam, who have been the center of suspicion in their small town ever since a girl died in a fire on their property. When another girl turns up dead, suspicion once again falls on the Abbott boys. Their longtime friend Hayden is determined to prove their innocence, but the more she investigates, the more she begins to question what she really knows about them. I really enjoyed the mystery surrounding the brothers and the way Ichaso slowly revealed pieces of the story. One thing I always appreciate in a mystery is when I genuinely cannot figure out what is happening, and this book definitely delivered in that department!
Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the mystery, this one just didn’t hook me the way Ichaso’s previous books have. I remember reading Little Creeping Things in one sitting because I absolutely could not put it down. And more recently, We Were Warned had me hooked from the very first chapter. That’s the kind of reading experience I’ve come to expect from Ichaso, so I think my expectations are pretty high at this point! With this book, I was definitely interested in finding out what happened, but I wasn’t necessarily rushing to pick it back up every chance I got. There is a difference between wanting to know how a story ends and being completely invested in everything happening along the way. For me, this book fell somewhere in the middle. I also felt like some of the relationship drama took away from the mystery itself. I wanted to focus more on uncovering the truth and a little less on the complicated dynamics between Hayden and the brothers. While the characters were interesting enough, I don’t think I ever felt particularly connected to them. It wasn’t a bad story by any means, but I was hoping for a little more suspense and that can’t-put-it-down feeling I’ve come to expect from this author.
With that being said, I still think Chelsea Ichaso knows how to put together a good mystery! I especially appreciated that I didn’t figure everything out early in the book. There is nothing more disappointing than reading a mystery and knowing exactly where it’s going halfway through, so I was happy that this one kept me guessing until much later in the story. I also liked how the different pieces eventually came together and how the past played a role in understanding what was happening in the present. This is definitely a strong three-star read for me. It was entertaining, the mystery was solid, and I was genuinely interested in seeing how everything would play out. It just wasn’t one of my favorites from Ichaso. I will absolutely continue reading her books, though, because she has written some fantastic YA mysteries! If you enjoy small-town secrets, suspicious characters, and mysteries that keep you questioning everyone, I would definitely recommend giving Beware the Abbott Boys a try!
